Next up is the harmonic series. Havil begins Gamma with a twenty page chapter on Napier and the early history of logarithms. Of all the classical functions, the Gamma function gakma retains much of its mystery and intrigue, since Euler first spotted it as something “worthy of serious consideration”. Havil presents a multitude of applications of both the harmonic series and of logarithms, which involve music, record-setting, testing, overhangs, information theory, Benfords Law on the frequency of first digits gaamma continued fractions, among other topics.

Requires a knowledge of calculus for full enjoyment. This book was written when mathematicians still “did” mathematics. This is actually a really big deal, as most of you math nerds are no doubt already aware. Many readers will find in this book exactly what they have been missing. If you’ve every been enthralled by numbers – even for a moment – this book will bring back that joy. Also, familiarity with complex analysis is helpful, but not technically necessary, as there is a decent summary of the subject provided in the appendices.

The discussion of Riemann begins with his weighted hzvil counting function, and things quickly become complex horribly cheesy pun, I know! The symbol is sometimes also used for. Mathematics is presented throughout as something connected to reality.

## Euler-Mascheroni Constant

I admit I skimmed over most of the mathematical detail in favor of the historical context I was really looking for. Havil is a math teacher who loves math.

Havil shows that functions like Gamma and the Zeta function, for example, are not just useful inventions, but are products of continuous mathematical investigation over centuries. Leonhardi Euleri Opera Omnia, Ser. The final two chapters discuss some unsolved problems to do with prime numbers, Riemann Zeta functions and the Riemann hypothesis, all of which are topics of much current research.

Wei marked it as to-read Jun 09, Thanks for telling us about the problem. Integrals that give in combination with other simple constants include.

Clearly elaborated proofs here are offered at important points or where reasonable generality can be had, but Havil is careful to mark caveats. At any rate, the book havip a bang-up job of thoroughly investigating one of the lesser known mathematical constants, and I highly recommend checking it out!

The book begins with a brief discussion of John Napier and logarithms. It includes quite a lot on history and applications, but it is at heart still a presentation of mathematics. Andrew rated it really liked it Feb 05, haavil He is the author of several books, including Disturbing the Universe and Origins of Life.

The core of the work introduces the harmonic and sub-harmonic omitting some terms series and zeta functions, before looking at the gamma function generalising the factorialits historical origins, and Euler’s Identity, which links gamma via the zeta functions to the prime numbers.

James Nickel rated it it was amazing Jun 04, By considering percents, one shows that the worm actually reaches the end of the band.

Preview — Gamma by Julian Havil. This is bounded by geometric series, and therefore converges. Among the numerous topics that arise during this hagil odyssey into fundamental mathematical ideas are the Prime Number Theorem and the most important open problem in mathematics today–the Riemann Hypothesis though no proof of either is offered!

If you like books and love to build cool products, we may be looking for you.

Sure to be popular with not only students and instructors but all math aficionados, Gamma takes us through countries, centuries, lives, and works, unfolding along the way the stories of some remarkable mathematics from some remarkable mathematicians. Cambridge University Press, pp.

## Gamma: Exploring Euler’s Constant

Strikes a good balance between popular appeal and technical detail. At the time this book came out, I was going through parts of Whittaker’s famous “Modern Analysis”. He ends by returning to the distribution of primes and describing the various ideas haavil up to the Riemman Hypothesis.

This is quite difficult and brings in some complex analysis which is explained in thirty pages of appendices. Lucas marked it as to-read Sep 19, BonarMichael J. It then explores what gamma is, approached as a decimal and as a fraction, and some of the places it appears, in connection with the alternating harmonic series, in analysis, and in number theory.
