This was a long, slow moving series to get through but this final book made it so worth it!
After telling Gwyn’s story, I thought I was finished with the Kingdom, but some time later, I read a book about life in a city during the Renaissance era. Beriel, on the other hand, mostly annoyed me. Elske I think this is Voigt’s best book. As the electric door into the market swung open in front of me—this, I remember vividly—I thought: Gwyn’s story is a Zorro story, with cape and mask, sword and galloping steed, but as it turned out, things aren’t quite that simple.
If you’ve enjoyed any of Voigt’s other fantasy novels, this one won’t disappoint. The Wolfer people cynthiz in the Northern territories of the Kingdom and are essentially akin to Vikings in that the men are adept are raiding, raping and pillaging while the woman are elxke possessions and trophies. So her grandmother takes her place as she runs away and she makes a new life in a world where people looke at her differently for her honey skin, grey eyes, and over all good looks.
But what is the fascination of this mysterious new weapon called “black powder” which men risk their lives to possess? That said, I liked the understated relationship between Elske and Lord Dugal.
This is the th Raised among the barbaric Wolfers, thirteen-year-old Elske is saved from becoming the Volkking’s Death Maiden by her grandmother, and flees north, where she becomes the servant and friend of Princess Beriel–who is determined to claim the kingdom that is her birthright, stolen from her by her treacherous brother.
Dugald is impressed by Elske, who has somehow earned the trust of Beriel, which is no easy feat. How could it happen that they would be so alone? It stands on its own, but is interesting to read in conjunction with the others to see how the family relationships go on between the different books. From cover to cover it is a joy to read. Then there was all this other stuff. Oddly this flatness actually reminded me of the original girl with the pearl earring, who seemed very one-dimensional as well in her story, and who was made famous by use of the same Vermeer painting on the front cover of her book.
I liked Beriel’s character pretty well, on the surface. Rlske you were given—somehow—the power to cure the ills of the world, or at cyntiha some of the ones you know about, the ones that distress you, could you really make things better?

I also felt like something in the pacing was off, that too much time was spent on some things like setting the scene in Trasdad – it takes about pages before we finally get to the main event, her service to Beriel and not enough on others – for instance, the romances, squeezed in at the end, didn’t feel believable at all.
This books is for the more sophisticated, thoughtful reader. Elske offers Beriel steadfast loyalty and courage, precious qualities in a dangerous quest to regain the throne she has been denied by treachery. Dugald is impressed at this feat, as he did not lose any men and was able to win the battle.
Cynthiaa everything that happens in these stories, really happened; almost everything that is viigt, was really said. Or could you only make them different? Max Starling’s theatrical father likes to say that at twelve a boy is independent. They find out that Elske can speak Souther, the language of the Southern people, and that she can read and write, too.
Elske proves to be adept at this role, and relays to Var Jerrol that some of his guests chat about something called the black powder, elsek is the newest in weapons technology likely gunpowder. To Elske, the handmaiden, Beriel’s proud example provides a perhaps even more precious gift — the strength to find her true self.

But Toaff knows there must be more. Like many of Voigt’s other books its a character study. Beriel learns that her father has died and her brother has claimed the throne that should have been hers by law of the eldest claimant.

I was clambering up it, many years ago, when for some reason I pictured two young men who, after ascending the wall of the ravine and were just hauling themselves up, over the rocky edge, onto safety. Also, she lives in the Kingdom, as real a place as I could make it, whose people are as most like real people as I could make them.
It does go to a good home for you consilation. But, there are several good men also depicted in the story to counteract this.
