Although originally intending merely to analyze this man and discover why he is unique, death dw becomes infatuated with him, enough so that she takes on human form to meet him. To add salt to the wound, If the intellectual and literary inferiority of this novel is not enough to make you suffer through reading it, the English translation makes it even worse; overly complicated sentences, very long at times, and very short at others, bad punctuation, I liked the author’s style of writing, and I think I would’ve accepted the horrible punctuation if the story was good enough.
For me it’s far from the merit and any more than useless descriptions, and sloppy sentences demanding for interpretations which have intermittencias.

But it just didn’t work with me. What I have after the second half is the personification of Death as the woman.
Premise was interesting but impossible to focus on the story when really nothing happened for the first pages written in approximately 6 sentences. I only made it one quarter of the way through this book. But there’s a lot of padding and waffle, and it seems that the idea didn’t justify the length.
From here, the story largely moves on to focus on death’s relationship with an otherwise unremarkable inteermitencias who, amazingly, will not die. However, in an effort to kill more kindly, death will now send a letter to those about to perish, giving them a week to prepare for their end. I am on page 70, does this book get any better, or does it keep going on in this vein?
But Saramago’s great blunder is not that he takes an intriguing idea and makes a joke out of it; it’s that he takes his joke and bludgeons it with verbose, rambling language. Honestly, it was a beating. This book sounded like it would be so intriguing, but I found it quite hard to follow. Dialog is embedded in these paragraphs without quotations or indentation so it became REALLY difficult to follow who was speaking.
In Saramago’s world, bloviation in the soul of wit. The violet-envelope-encased letters create a frenzy in the country, as people are not just returned to dying, but also must face the specter of receiving one of these letters and having their fate sealed intermitencis it.
Paperbackpages. This was a highly anticipated read for me, but unfortunately around 70 pages in, Intermmitencias folded. What unique experiments would your nation’s scientists craft to test the phenomenon? I’m not sure if this is just a quirk of Saramago’s, or if it’s common to Portuguese writing, but whatever it was it was too difficult for me to plough through.

I think it’ll be worth the effort. In fact, this is the first book I gave up on. I know Saramago’s writing style can be a challenge, but I was ready for that.
The magical realism does a big flaw step to gasps only the idea of cheap tricks to make the book sounds interesting, but have nothing meaningful to deliver. Death discovers that, without reason, this man has mistakenly not been killed. I feel disappointed and betrayed. Initially, the people of this country celebrate their apparent victory over mankind’s longtime foe. And the world’s great powers would certainly want in; they’d flood your poor country with spies and outside funding.

The author doesn’t even attempt to resolve that in anyway. What The book bombards very big philosophical questions in what-if situation: Lists with This Book. He even incorporates dialogue into the run-on sentences, using just a comma and a capital letter to distinguish speakers.
There’s no emotions concern about the personal issues such as death which for granted, I think it depends on the style of writing so I give him a chance and continue reading, which becomes my unconsolable regret. The book, based in an unnamed, landlocked country at a point in the unspecified past, opens with the end of death. But then again, this is not a science fiction novel, just accept the premise as it is and move on.
The problem I have here is contrasting to the first half that I complain about the banality, but the idea of humanizing some abstract but vast meanings, varied from many cultures and traditions into a form of a human is so problematic.
