How songwriters collaborate and publish in a home studio

Marianna

In an interview for an on-line article for multitrack recording software for musicians, I was asked about how songwriters can collaborate and publish in a home studio. A few years ago, I used SONAR in my studio to record a pretty cool tune, "Seek away", written and performed by Marianna and Derek B. Wanting to do a remix, I imported the MP3 file into Mixcraft 8 (see how to import and sync an MP3 file in Mixcraft 8). We fattened up the song by adding synth bass and drum tracks, and, by dragging and dropping in orchestral loops that are included in Mixcraft 8.

Excerpt from interview discussing artist collaboration and publishing:

How to add, edit, view and organize markers:

Step 1:  Click on the measure number to add markers.

Step 2:  Click on "Title" to name Marker. Use Markers to change tempo, key or signature.

Step 3:  Click on "View" in the menu bar. Drop down and select "Marker List". Click on Markers to navigate from verse to chorus to bridge parts.

Record instrument tracks and add loops to a song:

Step 1:  Add tracks and instruments (see add tracks / instruments blog).
Step 2:  Click on Marker of part to record. Click "Arm". Click "Record".
Step 3:  Click on "Library" tab. Type search word(s) in loop browser.
Step 4: Click and drag loop to audio track.

Using Mix-Down-To-Stems features for collaboration:

Step 1:  Click on "File" in the menu bar. Drop down and select "Mix-Down-To-Stems".

Step 2:  Select or deselect tracks to export.

Step 3:  Choose audio options (mute, volume or pan) to include or exclude.

Step 4.  Select audio format (WAV, FLAC, MP3, OGG, WMA). Choose destination folder. Click "Mix".

Using Mixcraft 8 one-click publishing features:

Step 1:  Click on "File" in the menu bar. Drop down and select "Publish".

Step 2:  Select and log on to music and video sites to publish to and promote on.

Step 3:  Upload artist or band image. Select render quality.

Step 4:  Add song title, artist / band info, bio credits, genre and promotional copy. Click on "Publish" for simultaneous upload to selected music and video sites.
